Usually laptop overheats and desktop overheats are caused by a broken cooling system, most computers have a type of vent fan to blow out hot air cause by the machinery-type stuff inside, do you hear a fan-like noise when your computer is on? If not, you may have a broken vent fan.

Do you use your laptop on your lap? Or, do you let it sit on your bed while you use it? Letting you laptop sit on the bed (or anything soft that it will not have a gap for air under it) will make it get hot and possibly overheat. If your fan is working, you may have a battery problem, and you should take it to someone that can check it out for you.

It may be a virus or your laptop is having a hard time breathing if that makes since lol. Scan your system for viruses, if none show up. Check your laptop for dust.

It is probably dust and lint clogging the fan exit. You can send it in for service, but they will charge you. If you feel up to it you can probably clear most of it by removing the door over the CPU and fan (rear of the unit on the side with the fan vent) and then using canned air to blow into the fan exit vent and back though the heatsink vanes and fan.

It is probably because the vents have taken in dust and the fans aren't performing at their best. For one thing make sure it is on a hard, flat surface. Once you've done that VACUUM the vent with one of your vacuums to extract the dust inside of it (you don't need to power the laptop off or anything like that). I know this sounds stupid but this is the BEST way for me. I've had many crashes from overheating and my computer would reach up to 53 degrees Celsius but once I vacuumed my vents, it immediately shot down to 18-19 degrees Celsius. It's amazing. You can download a program that controls your fans and tells you the temperature of your computer here --> http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html Good luck
