Look at ebay or any other auction site and see how many of each brand is for sale in the lower price ranges. This is a good sign of which ones are still running after a few years.

Doesn't sound like a bargain to me. You can build a REAL computer for $1000

The place I work uses Lenovo laptops. I carry one back & forth to work every day and use it at home and at work. Its a workhorse, stands up to a lot of abuse and keeps on running. I'm impressed with the Lenovo. Grandpa

Consumer Report put Lenovo on top. Use Google to see what prices you can find on this laptop. If you have electronic stores in your area, go visit them and check on the prices. However, unless you are a big gammer, a good laptop can be had for about $600. Compaq, HP, and Acer are great. Now if you want flexability and easy portability, stay with a laptop. If you must have great graphics then have someone build you a desk top. A Mac laptop can be great but you may find software problems.
